Little Penguins

Little blue penguin nesting season has begun at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium, with the residents of the colony commencing their annual nest building ritual.

Little blue penguins (also known as ‘fairy penguins’) begin their nesting between May and June each year. An important part of the nesting process is the collection of leaves, twigs and grasses that are used to build the perfect nest to lay their eggs.

Little blue penguins will pair up with a mate prior to the nesting ritual beginning, and nest building is a responsibility shared by both penguins in the relationship.

“Sometimes the penguins can be a bit cheeky, stealing nest building materials from their fellow feathered friends in order to be the biggest and best nest builder of the colony!” said Carla Haskell, Mammals Manager at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast.

Once nesting comments, the penguins will lay their eggs shortly after and it will be another month before any eggs hatch and new chicks are welcomed in the colony.
